It's GOLD for the GREEN Team

It's GOLD for the Green team

York’s BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel has become the first in the city to win a prestigious national award for its ongoing environmental work.

The 99-bedroom venue has been presented with the Green Business Tourism Scheme’s gold award – the highest possible accolade given by the organisation which promotes sustainability in the leisure and hospitality sector.

The judges were particularly impressed with the Waste-2-Water filtration system, which transforms waste food into water. Last November, the hotel became the first in Yorkshire to implement the system which has significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Graham Usher, manager of the BEST WESTERN Monkbar Hotel, said, “This is a tremendous achievement for the hotel.

“I’m incredibly proud of the hard work and effort that has gone into winning this prestigious award. We were the first city centre hotel to win Silver, the first to install a Waste-2-Water system and now, the first to win Gold!

“Reducing our impact on the environment has been a major consideration for us, and over the last few years the number of ways we are able to achieve this has grown significantly.”

Graham added: “It’s not just the staff who have helped us achieve this accolade. Our guests and suppliers have also been pivotal to us winning Gold.  Now we have the Gold award we will do everything possible to ensure we hold on to it.

“In fact, our efforts will not be reduced, but will be increased. In addition to benefiting the environment, it is also benefitting us financially too. Our energy bills are reducing - and so too is the amount we have to pay have out waste collected.”
